Breast lift (mastopexy)
Breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical intervention which aims to beautify the breast by offering it a more sensual form. Due to gravity, the breasts lose their elasticity and young shape. The physiological aging process is emphasized by various factors, such as breastfeeding, pregnancy and/or rapid weight loss. Depending on the individual form, the breast lift may be associated with enlargement procedures. However, big breasts can benefit from breast reduction procedures.
It is very important to explain to the plastic surgeon how you would like your breasts to look after surgery. You will be advised about the most suitable procedures for you.
Is it for me?
- My breasts have become lower with the passage of time.
- The nipples are facing down.
- After the pregnancy, the skin became stretched.
- I am pleased with my breast size, but I would like them to look more firm.
- My breasts are small and lowered (in this case, the ideal choice would be a combination of breast augmentation and breast lift).
Before breast lift surgery
During the examination your medical history will be analyzed. Be prepared to report your current and past medical problems, as well as your current medications. The purpose of this objective examination is to specify the size, shape, and the consistency of the breasts and quality of the skin. Your doctor may advise you to do some examinations before surgery (mammography) so you will be ready for the intervention.
The examination is the perfect time to explain the features of your desired breasts because the views regarding what is good and pleasant greatly varies from one person to another. It is important to clearly transmit your wishes.
You will receive specific guidance on nutrition and on self-care behavior. You will be advised about the medications which need to be taken or need to be avoided before surgery.
Mastopexy surgery
Usually in case of breast lift surgery, patients prefer general anesthesia. Another possibility is local anesthesia with the help of intravenous sedation. You will be under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist.
Breast lift procedures normally take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery and if it is associated with breast implants. When the breast doesn’t have volume, we recommend using silicone implants for esthetic reasons. This procedure can be done along with the breast lift.
The technical procedures are developed in many ways; below we will present the most frequent procedure.
An incision will be made around the areola and the position of the nipples will be defined. The incision extends from the center of the areola towards the chest wall and center fold of the breast. The excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is lifted, and the skin which was above the areola is lowered and sutured in the right position. This way a younger, more sensual breast form is obtained.
Patients who ask for mastopexy are not hospitalized but are kept under supervision for one day. During the examination, the advantages and costs of different options will be explained and you can decide along with the plastic surgeon the option which is most suited for you.
After breast lift surgery
After the surgery a compress and a bandage will be applied to your breasts. The medical bra can be worn over the bandage. After a few days, this bra can be replaced with a sustaining bra.
At the beginning, the breasts will be raised in volume and will have a bruised look. The swelling will gradually reduce and the numb area will regain sensation. You will be instructed regarding personal care and medications that can be taken. You will resume your activities gradually; it’s good to rest as much as possible in this period to allow your body to recover.
More details about this intervention and post-surgery recommendations will be received during the examination.
